What size coffee table for a 78 inch sofa?

For a 78″ sofa, choose a coffee table 39–52″ long (about ⅔ of the sofa) and 26″ or so deep, or a round table around 35″ across. Keep the top 16–18″ high.

Method: Designer rule of thumb: ½ to ⅔ of the sofa's length, no taller than the seat, and 14–18″ from the sofa.

  • • Leave 14–18″ between the sofa and the table, close enough to reach a drink and wide enough to walk through.
  • • Keep the top within 1–2″ of the seat height (16–18″). A table taller than the seat feels like a barrier.
  • • In a small room, choose a round or oval table, which is easier to walk around.

How to choose

A coffee table looks right at about half to two thirds the length of the sofa. Keep its top level with or up to 2″ below the seat, and leave 14–18″ between the table and sofa so it's easy to reach and walk around.
